2024 was a year of surprising releases, as well as many disappointments, although with a good taste in the mouth and that left Asobi’s Astro Bot as the title of the year for many, beating more complex videogames such as the third part of the new installment of Final Fintasy VII: Rebirth, the impressive Silent Hill 2, Metaphor: ReFantazio and even the acclaimed by users: Stellar Blade and Black Myth: Wukong. Many interesting plots were exhibited by the developers and there is no doubt that this year that begins will come stories equal or more incredible than the previous ones, next, we will expose the top of the most expected games for this 2025.
7. Assassins’s Creed: Shadows
2024 was one of the worst for developer Ubisoft, although they had an excellent start in January with Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown. Assassins’s Creed: Shadows had to postpone its release from November to February of this year to fix all the multiple “historical errors” that it apparently had and that the Japanese government itself pointed out when seeing the game’s previews, as well as changing some soundtracks.
Regardless of that, the story preview and gameplay of the video game are impressive, employing a cutting-edge engine and with gameplay and mechanics worthy of the franchise, being able to choose any of both characters of this new installment. In addition, the game offers a story with a character that existed: Yasuke the first foreign samurai in the history of Japan. If the game was already good in the 2024 previews, for its release, next February 14, it should reach near perfection, as it had advice from specialists in Japanese history and a great time to improve (more) its graphics.
6. WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers
2024 was a year with impressive Soulslike games like Black Myth: Wukong, but this year will not be left behind and will have huge games of this genre like The First Berserker: KHAZAN and Phantom Blade Zero. WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, on the other hand, is the only soul in this top (above the multiplayer sequel Elden Ring) because it shows a dark plot, suffering, sacrifice in a war context with a superb setting and a female protagonist who is determined to fulfill all her goals.
The story of WUCHANG will be available at some point this year, but it already excites all fans of the genre, surpassing the good graphics of Phantom Blade. Just a few previews of the title have been shown, all of them being excellent, since besides showing part of the story, it also showed its innovative gameplay and the main character (Wuchang) with unique abilities, being one of the best announcements of the Xbox Showcase, of the 505 studios and of Microsoft’s company in general.
5. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
The announcement of a new Metroid Prime video game was almost as expected as the announcement of the Nintendo Switch successor in 2024, and the executives of “The Big N” decided to release the announcement of “Beyond”, the new installment of the acclaimed Metroid Prime franchise. This small preview was the closing of their last big Direct of last year, but left fans pleased by showing the heroine Samus with the classic mechanics of sneaking in small places, showing a somewhat desolate planet and with the return of an old acquaintance: Sylux.
The new installment of Samus Aran’s futuristic adventures will officially be a release for the current Nintendo Switch, although a vast graphical upgrade is expected in its successor, the “Switch 2”. A tentative release date was not disclosed, but it is estimated to be in conjunction with the successor of Nintendo’s hybrid, as well as it is also believed to be a bigger game than previous ones as it took so long to develop. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be a worthy competitor this year for everyone and that’s why it takes a place in this top 2025 releases.
4. DOOM: The Dark Ages
The creators of DOOM do not measure themselves one bit when creating their video games and the word “brutality” is the trademark that characterizes their titles since the first title in the mid-90s of the last century. There was no chance to see any signs of a new installment of the new DOOM saga that started in 2017 and did not disappoint fans of the franchise nor fans of any action game in general and it turns out that the Xbox Showcase of 2024 opened with the announcement of its new installment: “The Dark Ages” leaving many satisfied and with great sensations for this 2025.
“The Dark Ages” by its translation ‘The Dark Ages’ will be the prequel to 2017‘s DOOM and 2020’s DOOM: Eternal, showing a Slayer with a more precarious arsenal, but as savage as he has accustomed us. This new story appears to show all the lore we’ve only heard in Eternal and the awesome The Ancient Gods DLCs, where our Earth-saving hero was a soldier of the priests of the underworld, performing risky tasks for them.
This new trailer shows peculiar weapons such as a shield with saws, a new skull machine gun, the classic super shotgun and a peculiar and fearsome ally that will help complete complicated missions: A dragon. DOOM: Eternal, released in 2020, had a game of the year nomination for everything it implied such as its complex narrative, graphics and impressive gameplay, however, it lost to The Last Of Us II, so the new installment augurs to be as great as the previous one. And although 2025 is coming strong in releases, it will surely be in the finalists for the award once again.
3. Monster Hunter Wilds
We must recognize that the “Monster Hunter” franchise has been characterized by revolutionizing all its video games to the point of surpassing itself with its latest release: Rise and the 2021 Sunbreak DLC. These new narratives that Capcom has offered are even more intriguing and immersive starting with World and “Monster Hunter Wilds” its new release promises to be even better than the previous 2 including innovative graphics engines, gameplay and mechanics taking advantage of the resources of the next-gen consoles.
What positions Capcom’s Wilds so high in this top besides its reputation as a historic franchise that began in the 2000s, is the enormous enthusiasm that its staff has put into it, releasing a myriad of exciting previews and even launching an open beta for Xbox X|S Series, PC and PlayStation 5 in late 2024. This new installment of Monster Hunter promises a story very much in line with its premise, but will revolutionize with fascinating enemies and a fierce boss of respect. The launch will be next February 28.
2. Pokémon Legends: Z-A
It seems that 2024 was not the year of The Pokémon Company after the disturbing Leaks of the company in conjunction with the lawsuit towards Pocketpair and its Palworld game that continues to be a resounding success. Although the company’s fame no longer seems to be in the games, but in its Trading Card Game, which continues to sell and is increasingly higher in the market, Pokémon video games continue to be well received by any console user.
Although their latest video game releases, Violet/Scarlet released a couple of years ago, had technical problems, this did not detract from their innovative battles. With its solid storytelling it was a success in sales worldwide and the previous “Legends” series that focused on the god of the Pokémon world, Arceus, was equally successful in the market proving that any video game that Nintendo releases under this name and that is an RPG, will be an absolute success in the market.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes the second place of the top, as it promises not only to be one of the biggest video games of the eponymous franchise, but also promises to be released together as an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch’s successor with enhanced graphics. In addition, it will see the tenth generation of the pocket monsters, the triumphant return of the mega-evolutions coupled with the Teracrystallizations seen in the Paldea region and of course as a redemption to what happened with the Leaks of the past of 2024. Its release is scheduled for sometime in 2025.
1. Grand Theft Auto VI
After 13 years of waiting, Rockstar Games finally gave solid signs of the launch of a new Grand Theft Auto and did so in a way that surprised the entire gaming community. While the launch of a sixth installment was already a pretty strong rumor among anyone, the developer confirmed it with a trailer that only increased the hype and showed what it will be in this new generation of consoles: scenarios, atmosphere and characters very much in the style of previous installments, but with revolutionary graphics, which showed that the game would be very realistic.
Rockstar Games, responsible for this new installment, announced the tentative release date, which will be in 2025, and GTA VI more than deservedly won the award for anticipated game of the year The Game Awards 2024, beating Ghost of Yotei by Sucker Punch or Monster Hunter Wilds by Capcom. To the bad luck of the fans, the release of the video game could be delayed to the beginning of 2026 due to its huge technical section and limitations in the Xbox Series S, although with luck and good work Grand Theft Auto VI will be released in Christmas 2025 and will be one of the best releases of the Next-Gen consoles.
This year that has just begun looks to be one of the best in video game and console releases in a long time and the entire gaming community worldwide is anxious to see and enjoy both the top titles mentioned above and others hidden by their developers that may become hits in the market. This with examples seen in 2024, such as the case of the hidden indie gems of that year: “Balatro” and “Slay the Princess” turning out to be top 10 in popularity lists in specialized sites.
