In a moment of solitude in the classroom, a series of events leads Komi to communicate with Tadano by writing on the blackboard, as if it were a one-way conversation. Being the first to realize his difficulties in communicating, Tadano picks up the chalk and begins to write as well. Eventually, he discovers that Komi’s goal is to make a hundred friends during her time in high school. Determined to help her, he becomes her first friend and partner in this mission.
