The sequel to the worldwide animated blockbuster, Super Mario Bros, revealed its release date hours before the start of Nintendo Direct 2024 through a post on its social network Twitter/X where it specified that they were working with Illumination, studios with whom they made the first film. Fans of the Mario Bros franchise and the first feature film will have to wait a long time, as the confirmed release date for the movie is set for April 24, 2026.
Super Mario Bros 2 announces release date for April 24, 2026
One of the most desired movies by the Japanese console community was the second part of Super Mario Bros. And how not to want it if the first was an almost perfect adaptation of Super Mario World 3D + Bowser’s Fury, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey video games, this beautiful combination also brought nostalgia for all audiences and ended up being a movie for all ages.
Just a couple of hours before the Nintendo Direct 2024 kicked off, Miyamoto surprised fans with an announcement via Twitter/X on Nintendo’s official account, mentioning that they already had an official release date for the sequel of the saga. In addition to this, they would be working together with Illumination Studios to make a “nice movie” remembering that they were responsible for animating “Super Mario Bros: The Movie” feature film that was a global success.
The official release date given by Miyamoto was April 24, 2026 in Japan, confirming the rumors of the second movie of this franchise. But what is truly surprising is the announcement that Super Mario Bros part 2 would arrive 3 weeks before its release in Japan, being for the United States on April 3, 2026. And while people can stand this wait, they could not stand that the announcement was not made during the Nintendo Direct.
The opinions towards Miyamoto’s tweet show some bewilderment combined with joy, because finally we have the release date of this great jewel, from Illumination + Nintendo, and among these we can read the following: “Shouldn’t it have been announced within the Nintendo Direct?” “You announce the release date first > Online media captures the note immediately > The views of tonight’s Nintendo Direct will increase immediately” > “Maximum effect” “The Mario movie was super interesting I want to see it again!”.
Likewise, comments on the expectations about the announcement of a movie of The Legend Of Zelda after the sequel of Detective Pikachu and two great games of this franchise: Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The kingdom, in addition to the announcement of the already confirmed Echoes Of Wisdom, seemed an imminent announcement, but apparently Nintendo has other priorities than meddling more in the world of cinema even though this was too profitable with Super Mario Bros: The Movie.
But Nintendo does not plan to give up and, although a movie of The Legend Of Zelda was not officially announced, its ambition will continue to be the line of Mario Bros, and despite having already defeated his greatest enemy and live peacefully in the “Mushroom Kingdom” there are still many challenges to overcome in the universe of Mario Bros. For at least in the first movie only Lumalee was shown, but there was no mention of Princess Rosalina and the journey to rescue her in Super Mario Galaxy, a good plot on which the Super Mario Bros. sequel may revolve.
The second part of the Super Mario Bros movie could also deal with more recent video games of the franchise such as Super Mario Wonder, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, Mario RPG or even revive a rivalry against Donkey Kong or show new rivals such as Wario or Waluigi that were shown in the first Illumination and Nintendo movie. Now we just have to wait for the months to pass to keep getting official information about the movie.
