However, the specialized critics at Metacritic have a different way of evaluating video games and here are the best games of the year according to this page.

The Metacritic top is not so different from The Game Awards, although it leaves many surprises.

Metaphor Refantazio — Awaken

One of the specialized sites to obtain information about scores and specialized video game reviews is currently Metacritic. Here press critics from the gaming industry from all over the world gather to give their scores and opinions on the video games released throughout the year and, of course, also gather the opinions of the users of these video games. With these scores we have put together the top 6 games according to the specialized critics and it is not so different from the top 6 nominees for Game of the Year according to The Game Awards 2024.

UFO 50 takes sixth place according to Metacritic

The developer Mossmout games, creator of Spelunky, released for PC its hit UFO 50, a compilation of 50 simple but entertaining 2D games. These do not turn out to be complex and because of its simple gameplay is in this high position, also, unfortunately this indie game was not well received by users, but it has a nomination for indie game in The Game Awards 2024.

CRITICAL SCORE: 91

USER RATING: 7.9

Slay The Princess: A mammoth tale of love and terror takes 5th place

Released at the end of October, in one of the months with great releases such as Metaphor or Silent Hill 2, Slay the Princess gives us a simple story that is divided into several chapters as you make different decisions such as ending or releasing the princess. In addition, at the end of each route offers a denouement full of mysticism that leaves all players impressed, The Game Awards 2024 has not nominated this game of Black Tabby Games even in the categories of indie games even though it was very well received by the public.

Black Tabby Games developer of awesome indie games created this gem of comedy, horror and love called “Slay The Princess: The Pristine Cut” a multiple endings and multiple paths adventure that takes us to new beginnings and discover the story of a princess who is locked in a hut while we make the decision to end her life or save her, Metacritic places this mammoth game as the fifth place in its top of 2024.

Final Fintasy VII: Rebirth the rebirth of the franchise’s success at the top of the charts

Metaphor: ReFantazio proposes and reaches the podium

Metaphor: ReFantazio may be the videogame with the best narrative of the 6 nominees for Game of the Year and for this reason it is in third place of the best games of this 2024 in Metacritic. It is not exactly the most impressive game in terms of graphics, as it looks like an old generation title, but its mystique, direction, story and character development, as well as gameplay and mechanics are impressive.

Atlus, Sega and Studio Zero combined to make a masterpiece of more than 50 hours of gameplay that doesn’t feel repetitive at all, a game that respects the styles of “Shin Megami Tensei” and “Persona” but that proposes a new idea and leaves a good taste in your mouth from the first minutes of the game until the end. Metaphor: ReFantazio proposes, is the best game of an October with incredible games and for that reason it remains in third place of the specialized critics.

CRITICAL SCORE: 94 (Must Play)
USER RATINGS: 8.8

Shadow of the Erdtree favored by critics, but not by users

The controversy of this Game of the Year nominee was unleashed days before when the official networks of “The Game Awards” announced that “Remakes, Remastered and DLC could be candidates for the GOTY” X|Twitter users criticized this decision, believing that it was a decision to favor Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (released in June 2024) and make it the undisputed game of the year of this year 2024.

Despite so many comments, it must be recognized that Elden Ring DLC is a huge challenge: it has stunning graphics, incredible gameplay, difficulty equal or greater than its predecessor, it is a full-fledged Soulslike that requires a lot of patience, exploration, bravery and persistence and it has all the credentials to be a new game. The specialized critics have highly favored Shadow of the Erdtree, unfortunately users for various reasons gave it a low rating unlike the previous installment.

CRITICAL SCORE: 94 (Must Play)
USER RATINGS: 8.1

Astro Bot the GOTY according to Metacritic

The exclusive video game for PlayStation 5 and ASOBI, is the number 1 of this year, according to specialized critics. Sony’s new and very charismatic mascot has managed to win hearts’ hearts first in 2020 with “Astro’s Playroom” where PS5 users had a first approach to the game and got to know all the Dualsense functions. And 4 years later, on September 6, its official video game “Astro Bot” was released which further exploits the functions of this awesome futuristic controller and includes even more levels and locations to explore.
