The boy and the heron: Colombian controversy makes headlines in Japan

As we had previously reported, a Colombian girl claimed to work and make a masterpiece in the film The Boy and the Heron, a film directed by Hayao Miyazaki, which turned out to be a big farce, since she even claimed to have made 25,000 frames which would imply something too difficult for a single person, and due to this incident she became very well known in social networks and even reached the ears of the Japanese.

As you may know, a few days ago a publication became very popular a news on social networks where a Colombian girl known as Geraldine Fernandez claimed to have worked in the animated film The boy and the heron having animated 25,000 frames, which is a job that almost no animator would do and after a series of controversy and evidence collected by users, this claim was denied in social networks.

And it all started with an interview conducted by the most important newspaper of Barranquilla, El Heraldo, which had the headline “The Barranquillero talent that won at the Golden Globes” in which the girl Geraldine Fernandez claimed to have worked in the production of The boy and the heron having animated more than 25,000 frames, sheet by sheet, scene by scene and all by hand, which made the news fly in different media and many people questioned her participation due to lack of evidence.

And after being confronted by thousands of users on social networks, Geraldine Fernandez released a statement on Twitter in which she commented that everything she had said was a lie, that she never worked on the film The Boy and the Heron and even apologized for all the confusion she had caused by her comments and for misleading the media to make this a news story, it seemed that everything ended here, but she never imagined that this would reach the Japanese country.

It turns out that several Japanese media, including the Japanese news website Livedoor News, have written articles in which they talked about the incident that occurred with the Colombian claiming to work for the Ghibli studio in the film The Boy and the Heron and even covering how it all came to end, certainly something that was not expected to reach the Japanese media, as they usually ignore this kind of thing.

But having covered this news it can bring enormous consequences for the person who was awarded this work, but in the same way it may go unnoticed, what will happen is that the Japanese will have a bad opinion as a result of this matter of the region although it is something unlikely may happen, so nothing more will be waiting to see the reaction of the Japanese public to this news that made many people feel displeased.

Undoubtedly this type of situation makes the American community look very bad and the artists who are coming to the fore in recent years that with great effort and dedication have really managed to work in Japanese productions and take an important part in our favorite anime currently being broadcast, so let’s hope that this does not come to negatively affect the work that is opening for Latin American artists and animators.
