Stellar Blade, the new action video game from Korean studio Shift Up, became a huge critical and sales success in just a few weeks. This was very important for its developers, as they used to specialize exclusively in mobile titles, but it seems that now everything is about to change. The company has just released their new financial report, where they hinted that they might already be working on a PC port and even a sequel.
Is the anticipated sequel to Stellar Blade coming?
Although the original report is in Korean, some people from the community took it upon themselves to translate it into English so that everyone can understand it, like @Okami13 on Twitter. This is how we learned about Shift Up’s plans with Stellar Blade in the near future, such as the idea of porting it to PC, because of the importance of this market. In their report they say: “The expansion of PC gaming to platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store has made Triple A titles more accessible to users, taking them beyond the limitations of traditional consoles”.
Currently, Stellar Blade is 100% exclusive to PlayStation 5, but these statements confirm that it may be available for PC very soon, via Steam and Epic Games Store. However, none of this surprises us, as it is increasingly common for companies to release PC ports of their most popular console exclusives, so not taking advantage of this platform’s huge audience would have been a wasted opportunity on Shift Up’s part. They didn’t reveal any more information about this, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they officially announce it in the coming months. After all, it’s likely that the limited exclusivity contract with Sony is still in place.
But the most striking part of this entire financial report comes a little later, when Shift Up says: “There are several precedents for Triple-A titles evolving into franchises by extending their lifespan through a series of high-quality sequels, and maintaining a long-term revenue base. Accordingly, we are considering producing a PC version and a sequel to Stellar Blade.” There is a lot of reason in this last statement, as the huge popularity of this game means that they could continue to make a lot of money in the future if they decide to invest in sequels, spin-offs, ports and more.
The Korean video game industry usually specializes in titles for mobile devices, and Shift Up was no exception. But the huge success of this action title could bring a significant change for the market in this country. If this studio decides to turn Stellar Blade into a huge IP with several installments on different consoles, it wouldn’t be strange to see its competition try to do the same. And if South Korea starts to enter the world of “Triple A” console video games, the whole industry could get very interesting.
