Rikka Takarada’s “rich thighs” in SSSS.GRIDMAN have opened a new debate among otaku!
A new and heated debate has arisen on social networks, especially X before Twitter, where a user known as “@ODEN_BB” shared a post where he made a comparison and commented that he found it “strange” that the new designs of Rikka Takarada in SSSS.GRIDMAN had a much more considerable increase in her thighs to such a degree that she looked very strange compared to the “original design” of the character. This was the result of some recent illustrations for some new products that will soon be released.
As context we must say that this trend of enlarging the thighs of female characters as happened with Rikka Takarada in “SSSS.GRIDMAN” is not something new, as the most representative case we have of this is that of “Hatsune Miku” where the original design of the character showed us a thin and slender legs compared to the new ones where her thighs are enlarged to make her look more attractive. This trend may be due to the fact that otakus nowadays find such thighs much more sensual and captivating than the traditional big breasts.
So evidently character designers have resorted to implement this new “beauty canon” to make their female protagonists more attractive and have a better presence among today’s otaku. As expected, this situation has gone viral and has triggered a new discussion on whether it is correct to do so, modifying the original character design as happened with Rikka in “SSSS.GRIDMAN” or if it is better to design a character with these features from the beginning and avoid such comparisons.
Otakus commented, both on Twitter and on the “Yaraon!” forum, that they found this design very unattractive, as it had “too much flesh”, while others said that Rikka was “fat” and would definitely have a “serious cellulite” problem in the future. A sector also said that this trend of excessively enlarged thighs had to stop, as it was not at all pleasant to see such “Chubby” peonages in the anime.
But there were also some who said that they liked this kind of thighs and that for them it was something “fantastic and very sensual”, finally a user added that this particular design of Rikka in “SSSS.GRIDMAN” was because the director Akira Amemiya asked for this character to have a big butt and thighs this big.
