Great news for Wii U fans. Two of the most iconic games in the catalog have announced that they will be available to play online again after months of being offline, and they have also confirmed the date when they will be ready to be enjoyed by the community again.
Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 are back for Wii U gamers
These games could not be played online for the last 5 months because a vulnerability was detected that allowed some attackers to damage other players’ consoles remotely.
Because of this, Nintendo took the drastic measure of shutting down the online options of both titles to prevent other players from falling victim to an exploit that was called “ENLBufferPwn” that was a real headache for the Japanese company.
This vulnerability has been fixed and these options are available in both titles as of today. In addition to Mario Kart or Splatoon, the popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons also had to close its online functions for similar reasons in order to avoid this type of attack.
This exploit forced the victim’s console to run a firmware that allowed the attacker to access the data of the console that did it, obtaining information from its owner. All this could be done in less than a minute.
Mario Kart 8 is probably the game in the Wii U catalog that has the largest online community, and that is why this is great news for this same community to continue enjoying their games on the predecessor console of Nintendo’s successful hybrid.
On the other hand, on Nintendo Switch there are exclusively available the two sequels of the original Splatoon: Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, two great games for the console, as well as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, an extended version of the Wii U title whose content can be expanded even more thanks to its recent expansion pass with more than 40 new circuits for those who want to expand the game experience.
