The recent Oscar awards ceremony gave a lot to talk about, especially in the category of “Best Animated Film“, where films such as Spider-Man across the Spider-verse, Nimona, Elemental and The Boy and the Heron, the latest work of renowned Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, were nominated. The winner was precisely this last mentioned film. For many people, this was something historic, since this had not happened since 21 years ago, when “Spirited Away” was the winner.
However, not all people agreed with this result, many considered that Spider-Man across the Spider-verse, another of the nominees, was the one that really deserved it and this difference of opinions caused a great stir in social networks. What happened? Read on to find out.
The Boy and the Heron competed with Spider-Man across the Spider-verse in the best animated film category.
Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse, another of the nominees in the “Best Animated Film” category, is a film that caused a great impact on the public and therefore, it was one of the favorites to win this award. So when it lost against Hayao Miyazaki‘s film, it caused a division of opinions in social networks. However, not only the viewers were the ones who spoke out about it, but also the people involved in the creation of this Spider-Man movie expressed that they considered this fact “a robbery”.
An example of this was the actor Shameik Moore, who gave voice to Miles Morales, protagonist of Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse. Who through Twitter/X expressed his feelings in a simple publication that said “Robbery“. This exploded conversations on this social network and immediately users responded to this statement showing their disagreement through comments like “What a horrible and unprofessional thing to say. Miyazaki-sensei can teach you wonders, you should watch his movies and take some inspiration”.
After receiving these comments, the actor posted another post on his profile by way of response with the following “I respect the winners. I’m definitely a sore loser, but we didn’t lose. Spiderverse has impacted MANY lives, maybe we weren’t recognized tonight, but life goes on…”
Although the case of this actor was one of the most talked about on the Internet for all the comments that were generated, he was not the only member of the team who expressed his dissatisfaction with the result that Spider-Man got in this award, as some other people also expressed this feeling in their profiles. Despite this, most of the responses from Internet users were defending “The Boy and the Heron“, arguing that Hayao Miyazaki was a legend and had more than deserved the award for the great work he did in this film.
Both films generated a great impression on viewers and the animation industry, gathering a huge fan base. Especially because they both come after big names such as Marvel and Hayao Miyazaki, so it is normal that so much commotion has been caused regarding them. The decision of which one should be awarded in this category must have been a very difficult one for the Academy committee, but it is safe to say that regardless of the outcome, both films are still admirable. Which one of the two is your favorite?
