The industry still manages to surprise us with titles that meet our expectations, and Insomniac Games‘ Spider-Man 2 was no exception. The sequel to the original 2018 title based on the classic arachnid superhero was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated new games of 2023, so it was to be expected to be bought by many people, as soon as it came out last October 20. However, its sales success exceeded all expectations of Sony, who have just announced that the new adventure of Peter and Miles has already exceeded 2.5 million units sold.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 breaks records on PlayStation!
This was announced by the official PlayStation Twitter account, in this post that reads, “Good news, Spidey fans. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has sold over 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours Thank you for making this a high-flying launch!” In the attached image we can read a text confirming the record: this is the fastest selling PS Studios video game in the entire history of PlayStation. This is really admirable when we remember that it is a PlayStation 5 exclusive, so those 2.5 million copies correspond to a single platform.
This figure takes into account all versions of Spider-Man 2 that have been sold, both in the U.S. and worldwide, and both physical and digital versions. Not to mention that PlayStation mentioned that these 2.5 million units were sold within the first 24 hours of release. Now several days have already passed in which numerous positive reviews of the game have already been published, so they have surely sold millions more units.
It should be remembered that PlayStation Studios is a studio made up of companies such as Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studio or Sucker Punch. Which means that this new project from Insomniac Games has outsold titles like The Last of Us, God of War or Ghost of Tsushima. For years now, audiences have been saying that the PlayStation 5 lacks solid exclusives that can compete with Nintendo and Microsoft. This year it already received the great Final Fantasy XVI, and now Spider-Man 2 helped boost the console’s value. We’d like to know how many people bought a PS5 just to get a taste of this arachnid adventure.
Of course, Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales received PC ports a few years after their initial releases, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Spider-Man 2 is also released for PC in the near future. But, at least for now, this title is the perfect excuse for Sony to keep selling more and more PlayStation 5 units. What do you think about the success of this game? Have you had the chance to try it out?
