March 10, or MAR10, is Super Mario Bros Day, celebrating the existence of the biggest icon in the video game industry. In honor of this important day, Nintendo has just released a video in which the creator of the franchise, Shigeru Miyamoto himself, announced something very special: The second Mario movie is already in production and confirmed its anticipated release date.
When will we be able to see Super Mario Bros in the movies again?
Nintendo uploaded this video titled “MAR10 Day 2024” on their official social media. In it, Shigeru Miyamoto appears to thank everyone who watched the Super Mario Bros movie, something that even extended to the holiday season, especially when it was added to Netflix and other streaming platforms. He also confirmed that the second Mario movie is already in production at the hands of Illumination Entertainment, the same animation studio that worked on the first one. Considering that the Mario film quickly became the third highest-grossing animated movie in history, everyone was waiting for them to announce a second one. But it’s great to have an official confirmation.
Then Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri appeared on screen and confirmed that the same directors of Super Mario Bros, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will return to direct the second one. The same team of talented artists at Illumination Paris are already working on the storyboards for the new film. Finally, Meledandri announced the official release date: It will be released in U.S. theaters on April 6, 2026, but will also be released in the rest of the world around the same date. Miyamoto then mentioned that their goal with this new film is to further expand the Mario world to have another fun story, but that they won’t reveal more details until they have something concrete ready.
It should be clarified that neither Miyamoto nor Meledandri specified that the new Mario movie will be a sequel. Although it will most likely be just that, we still don’t know if it will continue the story of the previous one, or if it will be a spin-off based on another character, such as Luigi’s Mansion or Donkey Kong. As for the popular characters of the saga that could appear, not only is there the post-credits scene of Super Mario Bros that refers to Yoshi, but many fans are waiting to see Wario and Waluigi on the big screen. Many are already speculating which Hollywood actors could voice them.
At the end of the MAR10 2024 video, Nintendo took the opportunity to make other important announcements, but this time about the Super Mario Bros franchise video games coming out this year. The remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will be released on Nintendo Switch on May 23. The HD remaster of Luigi’s Mansion 2 will be released on Nintendo Switch on June 27. The Game Boy versions of Doctor Mario, Mario Golf and Mario Tennis will be added to Nintendo Switch Online on March 12. Finally, it should also be remembered that Princess Peach: Showtime! is going to be released next March 22.
