This year Bandai Namco left fans in awe with Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, but Reflector Entertainment, a studio that is part of the company, also released a game: Unknown 9: Awakening, which was released a few days after the arrival of the new Dragon Ball title. That’s why many could have missed the premiere of Unknown 9: Awakening, which promised to have a protagonist with very useful skills for combat, but especially for stealth. Now that the game has been released, did it live up to expectations?
The story of Unknown 9: The Awakening
One of the most important aspects of this game is the story, which introduces us to Haroona, a young woman who has the ability to use magic, known as quaestor and whose main ability is to peek into the Reverse, a parallel world in which she can move and use her powers. Thanks to these abilities, his group was known for protecting humanity from an evil entity, but over the years the seal in which this being was trapped was weakening, something that was discovered by an organization that now wants to take his power.
But this story is not only about stopping the organization to save the world, but Haroona has a more than personal motive to interfere with their plans: revenge. And is that the girl will want to avenge the death of his former teacher touring India before being colonized by the English with many touches of fantasy and in turn antiquity that make up this world. And although this could become a good idea, the truth is that the story is very flat, predictable and at times boring, so the game will rely on its gameplay for fun.
Unknown 9: The Awakening gameplay
As the story is somewhat flat, the most interesting thing that Unknown 9: Awakening has to offer comes from the gameplay system, since in her journey the young girl will encounter different enemies that will get in her way, but as we mentioned Haroona is a questor with magical abilities, which she will use to fight. The game is divided into two ways to fight, either going head on and attacking enemies with punches and dodging (although this is very simple) or the juicier of the two, stealth, and this is where the girl’s skills shine in all their splendor.
Thanks to Haroona’s magic, she can see through the backhand to know the location of her enemies, surprise them from behind and take them down without major inconveniences or she can also use energy pulses to knock down different objects that can eliminate them quickly or attract their attention. But undoubtedly the best attack that the main character of Unknown 9: Awakening has is the ability to “enter” her enemies, so for a short period of time we can control them and eliminate them, either by attacking each other, placing them near traps or luring them to Haroona, there are several options.
And although this should be the best part of the game and can be enjoyed a lot, the combat phases in which Unknown 9: Awakening is divided can become quite repetitive, with some skills that can be surprising, but because of the enemies, as well as the scenarios end up being an experience that is lived in the same way throughout the adventure.
The graphics and sound of Unknown 9: Awakening
This review of Unknown 9: Awakening was made on a PlayStation 5 console, being that as expected this game should be enjoyed with great quality, but the title was released in addition to current generation consoles in the past, as PlayStation 4 or Xbox One and that shows. In several of the scenes where you see the characters up close, these have a slightly sloppy quality, something that is understandable, since being able to play Unknown 9: Awakening on last generation consoles is not something easy, although in PS5 the deficiencies are more noticeable.
Similarly, Unknown 9: Awakening works well when playing, without many problems beyond a bug that can be seen during the game, but at no time negatively affected the experience. On the other hand, the sound section meets the expectations, either in the cinematics or when playing, this will accompany well to what you are living on the screen.
Conclusion
Unknown 9: Awakening is a correct game, which, although it has some errors that may affect the most purists, it has very interesting ideas which, if exploited more, could have made this one of the best stealth games, especially for the skills of the protagonist. Those who enjoy more casual games without having to think too much about intricate storylines, complicated enemies or difficult controls, Unknown 9: Awakening is a perfect choice to enjoy a fantasy story.
Unknown 9: Awakening as we mentioned is already available in the market, and can be purchased for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox X|S Series, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows from the official Bandai Namco store, which we share in this link.
