Review: Akiba’s Journey: Undead & Undressed Director’s Cut

Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed Director’s Cut is a new remake of the Akiba’s Trip franchise, brought to us by XSEED games. They have been doing a great job of bringing iconic Japanese video game titles to current generation consoles, and thanks to them we can bring you this review today.

But what is Akiba’s Trip?

Akiba's

For those who are not familiar with the Akiba’s Trip series, it all started on the legendary Sony PSP, but unlike its remaster released a few years ago, this one was called Akiba’s Trip and only came out in Japan. When XSEED games released the remaster, they named it AKIBA’S TRIP: Hellbound & Debriefed, a much longer title than the original.

Soon after, it would have another installment called Akiba’s Trip 2, but unlike the first one, this one did make it to the West under the name of Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed, which we will review for you in a moment.

And like any popular franchise, it would have more titles for different platforms, such as Akiba’s Trip Festa!, which was a mobile game, as well as Akiba’s Beat, the first RPG game in the franchise. But it doesn’t end there, as it also had an anime adaptation called Akiba’s Trip: The Animation, which was not based on any of the games, but rather had an original story that fit the theme of the games, although it seemed more like a parody haha.

The Return of Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed

Now under the name of Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed Director’s Cut, XSEED games presents us this new remake of the Akiba’s Trip franchise.

In Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed Director’s Cut, they introduce us to a new story route for the Finnish exchange student, otaku and part-time maid named Kati Räikkönen, who is considered by many as the true route and ending of the game.

Although it is a great addition, the story tells us that Tokyo’s suburban district has seen it all, from Japan’s post-war reconstruction to the economic crisis of the 80s. But it has always been at the forefront of progress, with something to offer even to the most fetishistic of appetites. Because if there is something for everyone in Japan, it was almost inevitable that this unique technocracy of indulgence would give birth to a completely new kind of appetite.

This is where the “Synthisters” come into play. But what are Synthisters? Well, they are technically vampires that feed on the life energy of unsuspecting otakus who spend their time looking for anime, figures, cosplayers and many other things. But being a weird kind of vampires they have a hatred for light.

The story follows its course and we meet a young man named Akihiro Tanaka or Nanashi for his friends. He is an 18-year-old student and also a full-time otaku. Nanashi is almost killed by the resident villain Zenya Amou, but the mysterious Shizuku swoops in to save him before things get too serious. They both join forces to start a group against these vampire rats.

A new look at a beloved game for Otakus

Being an improved version and like the remaster of the first game, it brings notable improvements that we thank the developers for. From the visual aspect that is clearly superior to what we saw in its original version, as well as the gameplay. Being able to see those more than 100 real shops in Akihabara in this game is an incredible delight.

The performance is super good and as I repeat it marks a before and after to its original version. Being able to enjoy the opening with better quality is extremely amazing. On the other hand its original version for West for PS4 and PC was released by none other than NIS AMERICA guys and it is known that if you have that game on either of the two consoles they will respect your purchase being able to buy only DLC from Director’s Cut and being able to enjoy this great change.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this remaster is a golden opportunity for those who have never played any of Akiba’s Trip titles and much more now that we can enjoy them with better quality and comfort depending on whether you would like to play sitting in front of TV on a PS4/5 or lying on your sofa with your Nintendo Switch.
