To the surprise of all PlayStation enthusiasts, and specifically for those who still own a PS3 console, Sony has just released the 4.92 update, after having officially discontinued the console since 2016, and stopped releasing titles about 5 years ago, as well as a year after its last firmware. The optimization of its new software, while it may have been surprising, focuses mainly on an important aspect on the Blue-Ray reader, so it would be wise not to expect much new.
A PlayStation update that will enable further gameplay
As can be read on its official page, it is only mentioned that it will have performance improvements. However, some notes on the same site allow us to intuit that the focus is oriented towards the reading of Blue-Ray discs, so you will have to update it to continue enjoying the titles in physical format that are already an important part of the history of PlayStation.
This same update lets us see the importance that physical format games still have and how they have not been left aside, even though the numbers are leaning towards the digital format. So much so, that Sony and PlayStation continue to take care of the still millionaire base of players who enjoy their PS3, so that their discs can continue to work.
Those who have not yet been encouraged to make the generation leap, or have not been able to, of course, can feel reassured, since they will continue to be taken into account through this type of improvements, although of course, it is not the main focus of the Japanese brand, but it is PS5 where most work is being done at the moment.
In the middle of 2025 we are halfway through the last generation of consoles so far, 2 generations ahead of PS3, that is, PS4 and PS5. However, this official news can also serve to reawaken interest in the console and appeal to nostalgia, and especially to dust off the games that to date are an important part of the identity of the PlayStation brand and are those who have formed a legacy. Titles like the Uncharted saga, The Last Of Us, or Metal Gear Solid 4, just to mention a tiny part, are those who kept the exception high and marked a seal of quality among Sony’s main studios.
All these aforementioned titles can still be found in physical format, both new and second hand, so you should keep in mind that you must first update your console if you want to play them again, or why not, try them for the first time.
