Sanji is undoubtedly one of the most popular and most controversial characters in all of One Piece. Although the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates is an elegant and strong fighter, he sometimes sins of being too perverted, which many fans believe can “ruin” his character. On the other hand, the studio in charge of the anime, Toei Animation, makes things even more difficult, as they often add original scenes of Sanji that leave him in a bad light. And that very thing just happened in the most recent episode.
Was Sanji harmed by this original scene from the One Piece anime?
Episode 1107 of the One Piece anime has just been released, titled: “A Shiver! The hand of evil stalks the laboratory.” This is the adaptation of the events that happen in chapter 1075 of Eiichiro Oda’s original manga, which takes place during the acclaimed Egghead Island Arc. Halfway through the episode, we see what is happening with the Straw Hats and their allies, as in the previous episode they had split up to find the famous Doctor Vegapunk in his lab. And one of those groups is composed of Jinbe, Sanji and the beautiful Stussy.
In both the anime and the manga, Sanji is quick to do his typical pervert-in-love-with-every-woman routine: With hearts in his eyes, he compliments Stussy and tells her that if she wants, she can treat him like he’s her dog. She laughs and replies that she’d rather he pursue Vegapunk in a more serious way. So much for this brief interaction in the manga, but the One Piece anime lengthened the scene and included a strange moment where Sanji starts barking like a dog, even though Stussy never asked him to, and then acts that way for the rest of the episode.
This humiliating scene from the original anime caused quite a stir among One Piece fans, especially those who have Sanji as their favorite character. Although his perversion and obsession with women is one of the manga’s most iconic recurring jokes, Eiichiro Oda knows well how and when to use it. However, Toei Animation often adds scenes like this one that, although their purpose is usually to lengthen the duration of the episodes so as not to catch up with the original manga, end up leaving viewers with a bad taste in their mouths.
For years Toei Animation has been accused of doing this on purpose to make Sanji look bad in comparison to his eternal rival: Zoro. While that’s unlikely to be their goal, we can’t deny that these additions are pretty strange. As we can see from the responses to the clip that @Leleo2211 posted on Twitter, Sanji’s fans are not happy with this scene, with comments like, “What is Toei doing, my boy has no charisma anymore!”, “Nah, bro. This is too much…”, or “I really hate Toei…”.
If you’re a Sanji fan and you’re outraged by this humiliating original scene: don’t worry, because we can assure you that this mighty cook will show off in the rest of the Egghead Island arc, and this is just a minor hiccup in his impressive repertoire. Remember that One Piece anime releases new episodes every Saturday.
