In the manga and anime industry there are franchises that have become the biggest, among these are One Piece and Dragon Ball, both projects have a worldwide fandom that spans many generations and it seems that this will continue for a long time. But this time they have come to light data that have left many surprised, the pirates have dethroned the sayayines in an area that looked difficult and have added one more achievement to its history.
One Piece surpasses Dragon Ball in sales
For a long time, well-known franchises have led the market and set trends among fans, who have chosen their favorites. We know that each studio has its anime that has represented them for years and although there is a kind of competition to see which is the most profitable, the user @Schaewn has shared through Twitter/X data about their earnings and this has left many fans satisfied.
Recently, the famous studio has announced that One Piece has managed to dethrone Dragon Ball, which until seven years ago remained undefeated as Toei Animation‘s most profitable franchise. This is supported by the data revealed in the period from April 2023 to March 2024, where it can be seen that Oda’s famous creation in that time generated just over 22.2 billion yen, while Dragon Ball only 19 billion yen.
The difference may be small, but it is clear and significant, as Dragon Ball had long remained the number one franchise of the studios, but in this time One Piece prevailed. Apparently each franchise continues to grow in the public’s taste, but lately One Piece has made a great leap among fans, and we must not forget its strong participation in Bandai Namco Entertainment and its video games.
For more than 5 years Dragon Ball had remained at number one as the most profitable, but this was interrupted by One Piece and the horde of pirates that have joined the adventure. No doubt this has been something that has shocked fans and whether it is one franchise or the other, Toei Animation continues to generate regardless of which one leads the ranking.
But this has not ceased to disturb the fans and the comments were not long in coming when they knew such data, as both have put on trial some elements of why One Piece has made it. While the nakamas are victoriously celebrating this fact, on the one hand, there is the Dragon Ball fandom, which has commented that this is just something that reinforces that the sayayins are above the rest.
And the most important point they have highlighted to make this kind of statement is based on the fact that the Dragon Ball franchise has been “inactive” for quite some time. Well considering that Dragon Ball Super finished airing in 2018 and adding the unfortunate fact that the mangaka Akira Toriyama passed away months ago, it is clear that an advantage for One Piece is possible, since its publication continues just like its anime. Also that the difference was only 3 million yen and that somehow this is unbalanced if they are no longer on equal footing.
The debate and controversy of both groups of fans continues and with this they have also pointed out the differences they have noticed regarding the studio’s advertising campaigns. For they have said that while for One Piece they have seen more efforts to promote them in all possible media internationally, Dragon Ball receives no such marketing, as for their next project Dragon Ball Daima, they can barely notice that only a few promotional videos have been released.
Anyway, many fans may or may not agree or disagree with the data and why this has been possible, what they are sure of is that this would actually matter little among mangakas, and that surely Toriyama would be willing to congratulate Oda for such a feat. Let us know what you think of this One Piece achievement.
