Despite all the adversities and people’s doubts, the new One Piece Live Action series produced by Netflix was a huge success. Ranked #1 most watched on the entire streaming platform in over 84 countries for over 2 weeks, this series became a worldwide phenomenon that managed to please existing anime & manga fans and attract a lot of new fans at the same time.
Of course, having released all 8 episodes in one day, many people watched the entire series in one sitting and were left with only one question: when is One Piece Season 2 going to be announced? Luckily, Eiichiro Oda himself, author of the original work, released an official statement today where he confirmed that Netflix renewed the series.
Eiichiro Oda confirms One Piece Season 2 on Netflix!
First of all, Eiichiro Oda prefers to protect his identity and hide his face in public announcements. That’s why he transmitted this special message through a Den Den Mushi replica that Iñaki Godoy (Actor who plays Luffy) gave him a few months ago. In this video, the creator of One Piece tells how he worked with Netflix and Tommorrow Studios for a long time, acknowledges the effort of the entire production team and thanks everyone who watched the Live Action, both existing fans and those who watched it for the first time. Finally, Oda announces that he just received great news: Netflix renewed the series for Season 2.
The most exciting part of this announcement comes at the end, when Oda says: “The Straw Hats will need a great doctor We’ll see!”, followed by images of him drawing an adorable sketch of Tony Tony Chopper, the Straw Hat Pirates’ doctor in the manga, and one of the most beloved characters in all of One Piece. Since Chopper is a talking reindeer with a chibi-style design, many fans wondered how he would be interpreted in Live Action and some even believed that this character would not be included in the series. So to be sure that we will see Tony Tony Chopper in the Live Action very soon was excellent news.
Of course, we still don’t know how Chopper will be brought into the real world. It could use an animatronic, make up an actor or do it entirely with CGI. Considering how good all the characters looked in the first season of One Piece Live Action (Especially the Den Den Mushi) it’s likely they’re going to make our doctor look perfect. We are sure of one other thing: Actress Jamie Lee Curtis has to play Dr. Kureha, as she is a self-declared fan of the anime and expressed interest in playing this cute character.
However… Why did Oda say that it will take a while to get the scripts ready and that we should be patient? This is because all the writers and actors in Hollywood are currently on a huge strike against several companies (Netflix being one of them) for a lot of different reasons. The vast majority of the writers and actors responsible for making the One Piece Live Action come out so well are also on strike. So hopefully they can negotiate with the companies to get reasonable pay, so we can see the second season very soon. We fans will wait as long as it takes.
