One Piece is one of the most successful and popular manga and anime in history, created by Eiichiro Oda, the work narrates the adventures of a group of pirates seeking the world’s greatest treasure, the One Piece, and facing all kinds of enemies and situations. The work is characterized by its humor, action, emotion and message of friendship and freedom.
Netflix, the world’s most famous streaming platform, has produced a live-action series based on One Piece, which was released just a few days ago and which has been highly anticipated, being acclaimed by fans and critics alike, as it manages to faithfully adapt the original work and recreate its magic and charm. That’s what they say, but, let’s analyze a little if this is true.
Let’s talk about One Piece Live Action
The story of One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who dreams of becoming the king of pirates, and his friends, who form the crew of the Straw Hat. Together, they will sail the Grand Line, a vast ocean full of exotic islands, powerful enemies and legendary treasures, their goal being to find the One Piece, the world’s greatest treasure, left hidden by the late pirate king, Gold Roger.
The Netflix series adapts early story arcs from the manga and anime, from the introduction of the main characters to their arrival on the island of Arlong Park, where they face a gang of Gyojin pirates (Fish Men).
Speaking clearly, the series respects the essence and tone of the original work, maintaining the humor, action, emotion, message of friendship and freedom that characterize One Piece. However, it also introduces some changes and novelties that enrich the plot, delving into the past and motivations of the protagonists. It has its own personality and its own vision, not merely copying the manga or anime, but adapting and modifying what is necessary to create a fresher and more updated version.
In addition to having a good narrative rhythm, which keeps the viewer’s interest in each episode, combining action, humor, drama and mystery, without falling into filler or repetition. Each episode advances the main plot and leaves you wanting to see the next one as soon as you finish the previous one.
The characters are the heart and soul of One Piece, and the series does a great job of introducing and developing them, the main characters being Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji, each with their own personality, ability and dream.
Luffy is the captain of the gang, an optimistic and impulsive boy who can stretch like rubber thanks to having eaten a Devil Fruit. Zoro is the swordsman of the group, a serious and strong man who aspires to be the best in the world. Nami is the navigator of the group, a cunning and intelligent girl who wants to draw a map of the world. Usopp is the shooter of the group, a cowardly but resourceful boy who wants to be a brave warrior of the Sea. Sanji, on the other hand, is the cook of the group, a gallant and skillful man who wants to find the legendary All Blue Sea.
The series explores the history of each of them, showing their origins, their traumas and their dreams, which are told to us little by little in flashback mode. It also shows how they get to know each other and how they become inseparable friends, being that the characters have a great chemistry between them and generate comic, emotional and epic moments, which undoubtedly as a fan of One Piece have moved me quite a lot and I’m sure I was not the only one.
However, it is not all about the protagonists, the secondary characters and antagonists also have their importance and charisma. Some of them are Shanks, the pirate who inspired Luffy; Buggy, the clown who can detach his body; Kuro, the cat who plans a master stroke; Dracule Mihawk, the best swordsman in the world with a simply devastating power; Arlong, the shark Gyojin who oppresses humans; and Garp, vice admiral and hero of the navy who captures the king of the pirates. Each of them represents a challenge and a lesson for the protagonists, as well as they are used to tell the past and develop our protagonists.
The costumes in the series are one of the highlights, as they manage to faithfully recreate the design and coloring of the characters in the manga and anime. Each of the members of the Straw Hat sports an outfit that reflects their personality and style, from Luffy’s straw hat and red shirt to Zoro’s green suit and sword. The accessories, such as jewelry, weapons and tattoos, are also carefully crafted. Although if you’re a very big One Piece fan, I’m sure you’ll be able to find nods to outfits, which were only revealed in SBS from Eiichiro Oda himself.
Secondary characters and antagonists also have costumes in keeping with their role and environment. For example, the marines wear white uniforms with blue insignia, the triton pirates wear aquatic or beach wear, and the inhabitants of the various islands have attire typical of their culture. The costumes contribute to a varied and fun atmosphere that invites the viewer to immerse themselves in the world of One Piece and makes you want to be part of it.
The scenarios of the series are another element that surprises for its quality and fidelity to the manga and anime, where we can certainly see where Netflix has put much of the budget of the work. The series recreates in great detail the different islands that the protagonists visit, from the quiet Foosha Village to the chaotic Orange City or the restaurant ship Baratie, each one has its own identity and its own setting, which makes each episode a new adventure with mind-blowing details.
The scenarios also reflect the contrast between the beauty and the danger hidden in the Grand Line, on the one hand, there are paradisiacal landscapes, such as beaches, mountains or jungles that at first glance look beautiful. But, on the other hand, many times these beautiful places are full of hostilities and threats, such as military bases, prisons or pirate fortresses. Without a doubt, the scenarios are a reflection of the spirit of One Piece: a mixture of fantasy, adventure and humor, which invites us to dream big.
The series has an excellent soundtrack, which accompanies the scenes with music appropriate to each situation, the music is varied and ranges from epic and orchestral themes to lighter and fun themes.
We must also mention the great work of special effects, which make it possible to recreate the characters’ abilities, battles and explosions without making them look so “strange”, something difficult if we consider that One Piece is definitely intended to be a manga and anime, with extravagant and out-of-the-ordinary abilities. The effects are realistic and spectacular, without losing the touch of fantasy and humor that characterizes One Piece, having a combination of CGI and animatronics that allow a more real interaction with the world and not just an actor pretending that “something” is there.
Finally, we can say that the Netflix series is a great adaptation of One Piece, which manages to capture the essence and charm of the original work, being a visual, sound and narrative feast, offering fun, excitement and adventure. The series is one of the best productions of Netflix and of any live action based on an anime, noting a great affection for the world that Eiichiro Oda has created, but being perfect for both fans and new viewers to enjoy it and fall in love with this world.
