The Denki Guy Matsuri, one of the most anticipated events for fans of visual novels and video games in Japan, presented this December 2024 a proposal that left no one indifferent. Team Bitters, a well-known developer of adult content games, inaugurated a peculiar themed restaurant based on the controversial NTR genre, a narrative characterized by emotional drama and infidelity.

Entitled “A Night Without Your Wife: Curry to Eat Alone,” the restaurant offered visitors an immersive experience designed to evoke the emotional tensions inherent in the genre. Customers were greeted with a plate of curry that symbolized the situation of a husband returning home to find only a meal prepared by his wife, who, in the narrative, is with another man. This approach, at once ironic and symbolic, sought to translate NTR themes into a culinary context.

The restaurant’s main proposal was not only limited to the curry dish, but also sought to create an ambiance that reflected the complex emotions of the genre. Upon arriving at the booth, diners were guided to individual tables, reinforcing the sense of isolation. The space’s décor included illustrations and details inspired by the visual novel “Soredemo Tsuma o Ai Shiteru,” an iconic work by Team Bitters that explores couple conflicts and infidelity.

This title, released in 2011, explores the dilemmas and emotional conflicts of a couple facing infidelity, and its narrative has left a deep impression on fans of the genre. The work tells the story of a salaryman and his wife Nanami, who becomes involved in a relationship with another man, generating a plot loaded with intense emotions and difficult decisions.

The main dish, described as “thick and loaded curry,” not only referred to the texture of the food, but also to the murky and dramatic emotions associated with the NTR genre. The dish was priced at 1,200 yen (approximately $8), although there was also a cheaper version for 800 yen that did not include the themed extras.

In addition to the gastronomic experience, visitors to the stand had the opportunity to purchase exclusive promotional items related to the event. Among these products were:

  • A thematic pin with the phrase “I Love NTR”.
  • A mysterious note allegedly written by the “unfaithful wife”.

These products not only served as souvenirs of the event, but also became objects of interest for collectors and fans of the genre.

Team Bitters‘ initiative divided opinions among Denki Guy Matsuri attendees. While some praised the creativity and boldness of the concept, others expressed discomfort with the chosen subject matter. Netorare is known to be a polarizing subgenre even within visual novel fan circles, due to its emotionally charged and controversial situations.

Despite the criticism, the proposal managed to capture the public’s attention and generated a broad debate about the limits of creativity in themed events. For some, such initiatives represent an innovative way to explore complex narratives in an accessible and different format.
