The team behind Kairyu to Yubinya-san(Dragonite and the Postman) has unveiled a trailer that offers a glimpse of what this new Pokémon anime, produced by CoMix Wave Films, the studio responsible for Makoto Shinkai films such as Your Name and Weathering With You, will be like. The anime promises stunning animation and a new story, the trailer not only shows scenes from this project, but also features the theme song, “Kami Hikoki” (Paper Plane), performed by suis de yorushika and Evan Call, known for his work on Violet Evergarden and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
The story of Kairyu to Yubinya-san revolves around Hana, a young girl played by Riko Fukumoto, who deeply admires a Dragonite who works as a letter carrier. One day, Hana receives an unaddressed letter and, moved by curiosity and the desire to help, she decides to go on an adventure with her faithful companion Fuecoco to find the sender, in her search, she discovers that the letter was written by a boy named Rio, who was trying to send it to his father, who works in the Kanto region.
But as Rio’s father’s birthday is fast approaching, it seems that he won’t be able to receive the letter in time, faced with this story, the protagonist Hana along with the Dragonite embark on a mission to make sure the letter arrives on time. During their journey they explore the city, experiencing moments full of excitement and discovering some places that Hana has never seen before.
Director Taku Kimura, known for his work on Star Wars: Visions (Tattooine Rhapsody) and Osana Najimi no Carbou, shared his thoughts on the project, where he expressed his excitement at working on a Pokémon anime, especially in such a significant year, as he turns 30 and celebrates his 29th anniversary: I feel like I grew up with this franchise, he commented, although initially the project seemed to be small-scale, it quickly grew to become a standout piece for Pokémon Day. Kimura emphasized the importance of representing two types of Pokémon in the anime.
Those that work in harmony with humans, such as Dragonite at the post office, and the wild ones that live freely in the wild. It was a challenge to animate so many Pokémon, but we didn’t shy away from the difficulty and depicted it carefully, he added, also highlighting one particular scene he considers essential in Dragonite’s flight alongside Kyogre, a legendary Pokémon. When I was told I could include legendary Pokémon like Kyogre, I storyboarded my ideas and the scriptwriter, Kentaro Nana, incorporated them into the script, he explained.
For his part, screenwriter Kentaro Nana, who grew up with the series, expressed his excitement about working on a project like this. For me, Pokémon has always been like a close friend since childhood,” said Nana. I wanted to create a work that shows the richness and joy of Pokémon’s existence, conveying the feeling that “the world with Pokémon is amazing.” Nana also praised the collaboration with Evan Call, whose music brings a cinematic atmosphere to the anime, and with suis, whose voice in the theme song adds a special touch to the story.
The anime will premiere on February 27 on the official YouTube channel, coinciding with Pokémon Day, in addition, it has been announced that there will be a Pokémon Presents live stream on the same day, suggesting that more surprises could be revealed for fans of the saga. Finally, the anime Kairyu to Yubinya-san is expected to have a great impact on the community and become one of the most beloved productions of the year.
