In November 2018, producer Adi Shankar confirmed that he had acquired the rights to the Devil May Cry saga to make a new animated series for Netflix. Given that Shankar was known for having produced the acclaimed Castlevania series on the same streaming service, fans couldn’t help but get excited at the news. However, that was all we knew for a long time, and that announcement was followed by 5 years in which we knew absolutely nothing more about this anime. But today, during Netflix’s DROP 01 event, they released the first trailer, confirming that the Devil May Cry series is real and looks great.
Dante will soon return in the new Devil May Cry anime!
Simply titled Devil May Cry, this announcement trailer gives us a small glimpse of this new series based on the influential Hack & Slash game saga. Adi Shankar is still the lead producer, and it will be animated by Studio Mir, a Korean studio known for their work on great series like The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender and the recent My Adventures with Superman. So the animation is definitely in good hands. Hideaki Itsuno, director of most of the games in the franchise, confirmed that he was supervising the production, so we can expect it to stay pretty faithful to its source material.
The images we can see in the trailer are very brief, but they gave us a good idea of the tone the series will have, as well as giving us an excellent first look at what our protagonist, Dante, will look like. Because if there is something that this new Devil May Cry anime had to perfect it was our demonic hero. And what little we saw left us satisfied, as they present a fun, charismatic and completely crazy Dante who seems to enjoy fighting demons. Similar to that entertaining personality that we fell in love with in his appearances in the best titles of the saga.
Dante’s design in this new adaptation is also excellent, and it’s particularly curious that he seems to possess elements from all of his previous incarnations: with a DMC2 haircut, DMC4 shoulder pads, DMC3 harness, DMCV t-shirt and DmC: Devil May Cry reboot earring. The guns he uses in the trailer also look different from Ebony & Ivory, Dante’s signature weapons, so we can assume that the series’ story will take place in his early years as a demon hunter, before he got those iconic guns.
We have to clarify: While there’s already an anime based on this franchise that’s available on Netflix, that one was released in 2007 and doesn’t look like it will have any direct connection to the new animated series. If you didn’t see it, you can watch Adi Shankar’s new series with no problem. The first Devil May Cry trailer looks amazing, but unfortunately we don’t have any release date. So it’s likely that it won’t be released until next year.
