The manga Mieruko-chan has the following description: Miko Yotsuya’s eyes water as she fixates on a single point on her phone: she ignores another frightening and horrifying monster in front of her, uttering the haunting words, “Can you see me?” Up until now, Miko enjoyed her high school days unpretentiously, with late-night horror shows serving only as a form of entertainment. But since one fateful day, she is the only person aware of the invisible monsters that walk freely among humans.

Bravely, Miko makes a courageous decision: she will never, under any conditions, acknowledge the presence of the horrible specters. However, even though she pretends they don’t exist, she can see how they bother the people around her, especially her best friend, the energetic and charming Hana Yurikawa. To protect them from the monsters’ nuisance, Miko does her best to carry on with her school life and avoid all troublesome crises, even when they scare her to tears.
