The action video game saga Like a Dragon (previously known as Yakuza) has exploded in popularity in recent years, becoming huge critical and sales successes. Its distribution company, Sega has shown interest in adapting this story to film or television, so they have just joined forces with Amazon Prime Video to bring this ambitious new project to life.
Like a Dragon: Yakuza Coming Soon to Amazon Prime Video Catalog
This unexpected announcement was made by Amazon Prime Video’s official Twitter account, who published this excellent poster of Kazuma Kiryu with his back turned (in which we can see all his tattoos in great detail) along with a text that reads: “Make the decision to take the next step. Like a Dragon: Yakuza comes to Prime Video on October 24″, confirming the release date of this new Live Action series. This means that it will be added to the catalog of this streaming platform in just 6 months, so there won’t be long to wait.
Although this was enough to get fans excited, they didn’t reveal much information about it. Luckily, Variety magazine published an exclusive report with additional data about the new Like a Dragon: Yakuza series. This will be an action-crime-thriller adventure that will be told in 6 episodes. It will be directed by Masaharu Take (known for the film “100 Yen Love”) and Takimoto Kengo (known for the series “Kamen Teacher”). But the most important and interesting thing was the confirmation of the main cast member: The young actor Ryoma Takeuchi, known for being the main character of Kamen Rider Drive, will play Kazuma Kiryu himself, confirming that he will be the main character of this new series.
Variety’s report also gave us a first look at the plot of the new Like a Dragon: Yakuza series. It will take place in two different eras: 1995 and 2005. Viewers will be able to see the various events in Kazuma Kiryu’s life that led him towards a life of crime and his involvement with the dangerous Yakuza of Japan. It looks like this will be a pretty faithful adaptation to the original video games, not to mention that fans are more than happy with the fact that Kiryu will be the main character of the series, considering that he is no longer the main character in the most recent installments of the franchise.
This is not the first time the Like a Dragon franchise has been adapted to Live Action, as it already had a movie in 2007 that received mixed reviews. But this is a new opportunity to introduce this fascinating action-crime story to a new generation. And this is the perfect time to do it, not only because the Like a Dragon saga continues to be a huge success for Sega (including the recent Infinite Wealth) but also because Amazon Prime Video has just gained the trust of gamers due to the high quality of its Fallout Live Action series. So this new Yakuza series has the potential to be something really special.
