Horizon has undeniably established itself as one of PlayStation’s most important franchises, and its success has led the company to launch LEGO Horizon Adventures, a new game in the series inspired by the world of LEGO. So here we share our review.
LEGO Horizon Adventures is a game we didn’t know we needed
When LEGO Horizon Adventures was announced, I thought it would be an unnecessary game, but I regretted it from the first few minutes of gameplay, and the quirky comedy of the LEGO style and the way the game pokes fun at itself changed my mind immediately.
This brilliantly styled offering takes us back to the origins of Aloy’s iconic adventure and is not a spin-off story that takes place at a different point in time to the plot seen in the main games of the franchise. Instead, we relive what happened in the first game, but with very different elements that make it a completely fresh experience, engaging both new players and those who have already played the previous two titles.
Impressive graphics
The game looks simply amazing from start to finish and while the photorealistic aesthetic that characterises the main series has been left behind, the shift to a more cartoonish, LEGO-esque design looks just as great.
Every graphical detail has been taken care of to maintain the essence of the original adventure, making the world feel vibrant and full of life, with the LEGO block aesthetic adding a unique and fun touch. Every setting, from the natural landscapes to the iconic machinery, has been precisely adapted, retaining the identity of the game, but with the playful and colourful charm that only LEGO can offer.
In addition, the game takes advantage of the PlayStation 5 hardware by offering customisable graphics options, something that has already become standard for the console. On the one hand, we have the option to prioritise visual quality, with a setting that runs at 30 FPS, but allows for higher resolution and more detailed graphics, perfect for those looking for an impressive visual experience.
On the other hand, for gamers who prefer smoother action, there is a performance option that offers 60 FPS, sacrificing some resolution but ensuring smoother gameplay. This flexibility ensures that every gamer can tailor the experience to their preferences, while maintaining the balance between graphical beauty and optimal performance.
LEGO Horizon Adventures has exciting gameplay
The key to LEGO Horizon Adventures is its accessibility and focus on fun. Unlike the main titles, where complex RPG mechanics dominated the experience, this game is all about simplicity. Combat has been simplified so that any player can enjoy it without having to learn complicated systems. This makes the action much more straightforward, perfect for sharing with friends or family who want a stress-free experience.
Combat is a colourful spectacle, with LEGO pieces flying everywhere as we unleash mayhem. The ability to control additional characters, such as Varl, Teersa and Erend, adds variety, as each has special abilities that change the dynamic of the clashes. While some mechanics from the original series are retained, such as weak point scanning and the use of the bow, everything is presented in a much more accessible and lighthearted way.
The main goal of LEGO Horizon Adventures is immediate fun, prioritising laughs and entertainment over difficulty. Missions tend to be simple and straightforward, designed to be enjoyed in short sessions, rather than offering a deep or complex challenge. In this sense, it is an ideal experience for those who want a light-hearted and accessible game, where humour and block destruction come before difficult challenges. As such, we highly recommend playing LEGO Horizon Adventures.
