It is logical to think that, with the release of Kingdom Hearts 3, the legendary crossover franchise between Square Enix and Disney would have come to an end. But in reality that was only the conclusion of the “Saga of Xehanort”, as this huge franchise continues its course with an interesting new story. Over a year ago, Missing Link was officially announced, a strange new 3D mobile title that seems to continue the plot explored in Union X/Dark Road. But Square Enix kept quiet for over a year and its Closed Beta never arrived. Many fans thought the title had been cancelled altogether, until today, because we now have a new trailer!
Kingdom Hearts Missing Link Confirms Closed Beta and Tentative Release Date
In this new trailer that Square Enix published on their social networks, the game is self-described as a “GPS Action RPG”. Based on this and the new screenshots, we can confirm that Kingdom Hearts Missing Link will be a mobile title similar to Pokémon Go, where you can visit real-world locations to battle hordes of Heartless. But the best part is that the trailer confirms that you won’t need to leave your house to play.
If the 2D gameplay of Kingdom Hearts Union X/Dark Road wasn’t your thing, then Missing Link will be more appropriate for you, as it features a 3D combat system with beautiful graphics, similar to the home console installments. It is impressive to think that this will be a video game for cell phones. You will be able to collect statues of iconic characters from the franchise and Disney to unlock powerful special attacks. It is similar to Union X/Dark Road combat, but with 3D environments & enemies.
One curiosity is that some Kingdom Hearts fans who paid close attention to the trailer began to speculate that Disney Worlds based on new movies might be introduced in this title. In one segment we can see gameplay inside a bright tropical environment. Will this be a world based on Moana? Or Lilo & Stitch?
The story of Missing Link is completely new, and will take place in a time period that has never been explored by the franchise until now. Although we still don’t know much about it, we can deduce that it would be set in the past and that it takes place after the events of Union X/Dark Road, the previous title for mobile devices. Although one of the most intriguing aspects is the fact that it takes place in Scala ad Caelum, a world introduced in Kingdom Hearts 3 that we still don’t know much about. So Missing Link is the perfect opportunity to further explore that part of the lore.
Kingdom Hearts Missing Link will be released for iOS and Android systems in 2024. While we don’t have a concrete release date, we don’t think it will take that long because they’ve also just confirmed that its first Closed Beta will be held only in the UK and Australia.
