The popular manga Jujutsu Kaisen has given us excellent moments thanks to its powerful story and endearing characters, which have earned it a large number of fans and its popularity is increasing as time goes by. Fans of this franchise, always find something new that generates a lot of conversation within the fandom, as on this occasion a Twitter/X user shared a publication with all the pop culture references that can be found within Jujutsu Kaisen.
Jujutsu Kaisen surprises fans with all of the popular references found in the manga and anime.
Through the platform Twitter/X. the user @Ryomen_toshiro made a publication with all the references he found to popular culture within Jujutsu Kaisen, several of these have already been commented several times by the fandom in social networks, for example a scene in which Nanami and Yuji are climbing the stairs and we can see a cardboard figure of a volleyball player and apparently, it is nothing more and nothing less than Tooru Oikawa, one of the most popular characters of Haikyuu!!!.
Another very important part is when Yuji is hanging a poster on the wall of his room at the wizardry school and we see a blonde girl. This girl refers to the famous actress Jennifer Lawrence, who as we will remember, is the example that our protagonist uses to describe what would be his ideal type of woman. Moving on to another scene, you will surely remember when Gojo was introducing Yuji to the world of sorcery and Yuji tries to practice using cursed energy, but it doesn’t work out as well as he expected and he says that he would have liked to do a Spirit Gun, a Bankai, a Rasengan or a Dodon Ray.
All of the above are legendary techniques mentioned in the anime Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, Naruto and Dragon Ball. Continuing with this part where Yuji is learning to control and use the cursed energy, you will surely remember the part where he is watching the movies, because here we have another reference and this time it is to the famous “Lord of the Rings” movies. Another important reference to western pop culture, is a panel in the manga where Hakari is doing the same pose as the well-known “King of Pop”, Michael Jackson.
This scene, where the Jujutsu Kaisen characters are enjoying a picnic, is referencing a famous painting called “Lunch on the Grass” by Édouard Manet. Similarly, on several occasions mentions are made to very important actors, characters, games, etc. of pop culture, such as the actor Sebastian Stan, in episode 15 of the first season, Ninja Warrior, Mirko Cro Crop, mentioned in episode 1 of the first season. Even, at some point, the popular game Super Smash Bros makes its appearance in the anime.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is another anime that is part of this list of references, and it is in episode 11 of the first season, where the director Yaga is sitting in a very peculiar way and Gojo is behind him, here Yaga does the legendary pose that Gendo Ikari, from the previously mentioned Evangelion also does in an episode of the anime. Now let’s talk about a very popular scene from the first opening of the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen, the one where MAPPA studio tricked us fans with the appearance of Junpei.
We already know that the villains of Jujutsu Kaisen, are quite peculiar and that, instead of making their evil plans in a gloomy secret lair, they like to enjoy their afternoons, either at the beach or in a children’s playground or competing in board games, where just in episode 24 of the first season they show us that they are enjoying a game called “Game of Life.“
Even Gojo shows us that he is a great connoisseur of western pop culture, by showing Yuji his movie collection where we find titles such as “Leon: The Professional”, “The Host”, “Deep Blue Sea” “The Descendent” “The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On”. Continuing with our beloved Gojo, in one part of the anime he says the dialogue “I would love to say that the students of the great Professor Gojo exorcised them all”, with which he is making reference to the “Great Professor Onizuka”, also known as “GTO”.
Finally, we have several scenes of Jujutsu Kaisen characters making references to movies such as “Cast Away”, “Kill Bill” by famous director Quentin Tarantino, “Winnie-the-Pooh” and “The Raid 2: Berandal”. What do you think of all these references that we can find throughout Jujutsu Kaisen? Are there any others that you know and have not been mentioned in this note? Tell us in the comments.
