It seems like a delicate thing to talk about, which is hard to tell nowadays, but you have to understand the Japanese who see things this way, where did it all start? A constant debate on social networks that takes topics like this, something that comes from certain users who have criticized the initiative of a protagonist of color, something that for the Japanese, who are very conservative, is almost impossible.
Japanese group refutes that anime protagonists should not be colored
No, it is not an all-out war, it is just a thread of opinions on the Twitter/X social network that arises from a user who makes illustrations of anime characters, with the difference that these are colored. This is something that many conservatives do not like, causing them to leave somewhat accurate comments, which from their point of view is correct, although the Japanese themselves respond to these conservatives that there would be no problem in having colored characters in anime series. If you want to see the comment thread, you can do it in this link here.
The threads begin by mentioning something very strong: “the world is fine, without colored protagonists in anime”, a comment that is evoked by a certain user, which has made Japanese forums comment on this fact, leaving different results, some agree, but a large group thinks positively saying “add more people of color in anime”.
Some comments at the end of the thread conclude that, those who excluded people of color from anime, are simply people who are against them. Something that is not shared by many Japanese, as there are very endearing characters of color, a living example of this is Bleach, which has Chad (Yasutora Sado) and Yoruichi shihoin (among many others). Speaking of Yoruichi, on our page we have featured a majestic H figure of her in this note.
Many of the additional comments to this thread mention that they don’t want it to become a habit to do things for the fads that are brought in by the media, that it should be natural, as is the series that stand out. Another example is Black Lagoon, which features characters of all ethnicities, one of its main ones being a man of color named Dutch, who is well liked, a mercenary to be feared who has a lot of experience in the field.
One way to conclude this thread of debates, is to understand that the Japanese live in another continent, which explains why there are so few colored protagonists compared to the whites, something that may seem an offense, but in the place where the anime is made there are mostly people of that race. Despite the above mentioned, there are hundreds of characters of color that the public loves and has as part of the best of their series, something that shows the love that Japan and the whole world has for them.
