Japan is one of the most important countries in the world, which is why it is usually the tourist spot chosen by thousands of people, whether they are lovers of its culture, landscapes or more specific points such as love for anime, manga or video games to take a holiday or spend a few days. But in the last few hours a Chilean tourist became the focus of the problems, as she starred in a most repudiatory situation in a place considered sacred for the Japanese community, which is why she quickly became a trend in that country and on social networks.
Chilean influencer performs exercises at a torii gate in Japan
In the last few hours, the video of a Chilean influencer called Marimar Pérez, who creates fitness content in Japan, has been going viral on social networks, such as Twitter/X, but it carries with it a great lack of respect for the Asian country and above all for its culture. In this audiovisual piece we see that the young woman, following the rhythm and lyrics of a famous song, begins to perform ‘pull-ups’ on a torii gate, a very important symbol in the religious aspect of the country, as this is the access to each Shinto shrine.
Moreover, this type of gate is of great importance in Japan because, in addition to being the entry point to a sacred place such as a shrine, they are usually highly respected, as in many cases they are erected to honour the spirits of nature. That is why the lack of respect on the part of the influencer was more than evident, so much so that she had to apologise on her social networks, for example on Instagram, where she commented that it was not her intention to do what she did.
But as was to be expected, the networks rose up against the influencer’s actions, the most offended were the Japanese themselves, and on networks such as Twitter/X, where the video went viral, the messages attacking the girl can be seen in droves. Many of them complained about how someone could visit a country as important as Japan and not know a little about its culture, given that the torii gates are usually one of the country’s main attractions.
Finally this also angered the public in Japan, as the stories of foreigners visiting the country without any respect for the culture of the Asian country is becoming a big problem for society, as they believe that many only visit for the idealised world of anime or video games. Now we will have to see if the influencer will have some kind of legal punishment after what happened or if the apologies made on her social networks will be enough to calm the attacks from Japanese residents.
