Japan: AI uses cosplayer’s face to create a video

Recently in the social networks of Japan has begun to circulate a news that has outraged many people. Apparently the famous cosplayer Moe Iori found a video where she is the protagonist, but curiously she had never recorded that. It turns out that an artificial intelligence was used to create this product, taking several photos of her as a reference to later turn them into a video.

“Moe Iori, the owner of the body, has discovered her own body…”, those were the words used by Moe Iori in the post she made on Twitter after finding a video that was made by AI that also used many of the Japanese cosplayer’s photographs as a reference. It is worth mentioning that Iori also asked for the video to be deleted and it seems that the account that posted it no longer exists.

Many netizens in Japan came to the cosplayer’s defense and also gave us their opinion about what happened; “I really hate the evasive phrase I just used an AI service. You should be aware that you are infringing on copyright and portrait rights”, “A lot of people are surprised by this, but there have already been cases where cosplayers uploaded their images online and then made them with unauthorized AI and sent them to each other via DM”.

Those were some of the comments left. What happened to Moe Iori is really something very unfortunate, but nowadays it is becoming more and more common to use this kind of technology, just as it brings with it many good things and benefits for all of us, it can also be quite harmful if not used correctly.

An example of a misuse of AI is exactly what we are seeing right now with what happened to Moe Iori in Japan. The technology was most likely used for malicious purposes, in this case she took the liberty of using without consent the image of a person and subsequently creating a product that was spread on social networks, what would have happened if the cosplayer didn’t notice? Would the video still be posted?

Fortunately, Moe Iori found the video and made a post making it clear that it was not about her, put her fans, as well as the general population, in context, and asked for that video to be taken down because it was uncomfortable for her. Furthermore, she had not given consent for her image to be used, so even if she had not clarified the situation, many fans would have thought that the person in the video was really her.

With this we can realize that there are many risks when using AI and that can happen anywhere in the world, not only in Japan, as these new technologies can do many jobs without human supervision and that is a bit scary, isn’t it? The amount of information that is stored in the cloud that many AI systems have access to can also pose a problem.

Imagine that all your information can be used because you do not have adequate security measures, that can be a clear threat to our privacy. We can say that there are many good things as well as bad when using AI, we recently talked about how AI can help artists to find inspiration (you can read that article here) and we even raised the idea that at some point artists and systems could create a work together.

It is important that we know the risks and benefits that come with new technological advances, there must be regulations and what is fundamental, AI must not be used in an unconscionable way to harm others, today this incident occurred in Japan, but tomorrow it could happen anywhere in the world.
