Within the world of manga and anime there are a wide variety of genres for fans to enjoy, from romances to epic battles, the variety is very large, and one of the most important genres is undoubtedly the isekai: those works where our protagonists are sent to fantastic worlds to live adventures. But even with all these years there are some unknowns surrounding the isekai, being the fundamental how they work, especially how it is done for an ordinary human to reach these worlds and the anime Black Summoner (Kuro no Shōkanshi) seems to have answered that question.
How isekai anime works according to Black Summoner
Over the years, one of the most important genres in both manga and anime is undoubtedly the isekai, those stories where we can reach wonderful worlds full of incredible characters and in which our protagonist is usually present in various ways. But apparently there are many fans who do not know perfectly what is the real way by which an ordinary person can now be part of scenarios where magic, elves, knights and more are part. And their question has been answered, at least that’s what we can know thanks to the anime Black Summoner (Kuro no Shōkanshi) which in one scene explains it.
At one point in the series, we can see the character Melfina who is explaining perfectly how is the process for someone to get from the real world to the fantasy world, being that there are two ways to achieve this: teleport or reincarnate. And both concepts have the same purpose, but they take the person in different ways, the first one focuses on simply bringing someone alive from the real world to the fantasy world, while reincarnate is about invoking the soul of someone deceased.
And there are clear examples within the isekai anime where we can see perfectly both ways of taking our characters to these worlds. For example, if we talk about “teleporting” who suffered this fate was Subaru Natsuki the protagonist of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu), which was a hikikomori who was leaving a store and suddenly arrives in a new world. On the other hand, speaking of reincarnation, the example is Kazuma Sato, the protagonist of KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!), who after losing his life due to a scare is reincarnated in his fantasy world.
With this explained in Black Summoner we understand how one of the most important points to understand how an isekai anime works is centered on how the protagonists arrive to the fantasy worlds, which are divided into these two main topics. There may be some exceptions to the rule, such as what happens in Sword Art Online, but that is a debate that has been going on for years within the community, and it is still called an isekai even when the characters can leave that fantasy world at any time.
