Hideo Kojima

Hideo Kojima may be ready to direct a movie in about 5 years

The legendary creator of Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima, confirmed what many movie and video game fans have been waiting for years: yes, he wants to direct a movie… but not yet. Although there is not too much information, Kojima himself has given more than one idea of what he wants for the future at the directorial level.

Hideo Kojima always innovating

In a recent interview with Le Film Français, Hideo Kojima revealed that he has received “many, many offers” to dabble in film since breaking with Konami in 2015. However, his priorities are clear: he must first finish Physint. This is his new action and espionage project for PlayStation, before seriously thinking about making the leap to the big screen.

“I’ve had a lot of proposals since I left Konami, with very serious conditions to develop games at my independent studio,” Kojima explained. “In addition to Death Stranding 2, Physint is also in development. That will take me another five or six years. But maybe after that, I’ll finally decide to make a movie.”

Hideo Kojima’s passion for cinema is no secret. In fact, many consider that his games already have a cinematic soul. He himself admits: “I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute. Besides, I’m already getting old and I prefer to do it while I’m still young.”

What is Physint and why is everyone talking about it?

Announced by PlayStation StudiosHermen Hulst during the January 2024 State of Play, Physint has been shrouded in mystery ever since. Although it was initially thought to be a hybrid between video game and movie, Kojima later clarified on social media that, although the project draws heavily from the language of cinema, it is still a video game.

According to Hideo Kojima himself, Physint will elevate all aspects of digital entertainment: story, acting, directing, sound, fashion and casting. It won’t be a movie, but it will be something that might look like one. At the time, the announcement ignited the networks and fueled theories about its possible spiritual connection with the Metal Gear saga.

Other projects by Kojima Productions

While Physint is still in development, Kojima is not resting. His studio is also working on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which will arrive this June 26, and OD, a new IP created together with Xbox Game Studios. The latter project features actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele.

Hideo Kojima podría estar listo para dirigir una película en unos 5 años

As if that wasn’t enough, Hideo Kojima is also involved in the film adaptation of Death Stranding, with studio A24. And as if all this wasn’t enough, a few days ago he revealed that he left his team a USB with ideas for future games… even after his death.

Between discarded ideas, an experimental game about oblivion, and the weight of multiple simultaneous productions, it’s clear that Hideo Kojima continues to walk a blurry line between film and video games. But if he has demonstrated anything throughout his career, it is that where he sets his sights, sooner or later he succeeds.
