Helldivers 2, the new multiplayer title developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and distributed by Sony Interactive Entertainment is undoubtedly one of the biggest video games of the moment. With nearly 500,000 players active around the clock, the war to save Super-Earth from the mighty Automatons has generated a lot of cooperation in this huge community. One of the most recent missions managed to unite more than 180,000 people to liberate the planet Veld How did this happen?
The organization of the Helldivers 2 players is amazing.
One of the most outstanding mechanics of Helldivers 2 is its “major orders”, in which all the players in the world, connected through the Internet, are ordered to unite to fulfill a common objective. On this occasion, the order was given to free the planet known as Veld from a swarm of huge insects known as Terminids. This would not be an easy task, due to the combat difficulty of these insects and the fact that the mission took place on a single individual planet. But the reward was very tempting, as 45 medals (the game’s currency) would be awarded to all involved.
All Helldivers 2 players in the world needed to work together in an orderly fashion if they were to overcome this dangerous major order. That’s why a worldwide appeal was made, since it had been calculated that it would take around 300,000 simultaneous players to save Veld. After all, the planet’s recovery rate was 7%, which indicated that it was going to be quite difficult. After the initial call, players were able to organize themselves through numerous social networks, such as Twitter or Reddit, and even connected through the game’s official Discord. This was a process of global cooperation done at a truly amazing level and speed.
All of this could be seen on the data collection site, Helldivers.io. Although they did not manage to accumulate the required 300,000 players, they accumulated around 120,000 in record time, which would later grow to over 180,000. In just a few hours, this group of Helldivers 2 players managed to free Veld completely, securing the reward for everyone. Although there was also another factor at play: someone at Arrowhead was playing with the numbers, changing Vald’s recovery rate from 7% to 3% and then to 20%.
Johan Pilestedt, the CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios, once spoke to the PC Gamer site and told how the Helldivers 2 multiplayer experience is heavily inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. This is due to the existence of a developer who fulfills a role similar to that of a “Dungeon Master” in the famous role-playing game. His name is simply Joel and he is in charge of adding various unexpected twists to quests to shock players. According to Pilestedt, Joel takes his job very seriously, so everyone should watch out for his tricks.
However, this time around, more than 180,000 Helldivers 2 players managed to beat Joel at his own game and freed Veld in record time. We congratulate them, and hope everyone enjoys their juicy reward.
