Nintendo Switch has already established itself as one of the best-selling and best consoles in history, being just a few units behind PlayStation, which still holds that award. With this “hybrid” console, sales have always been and are assured year after year because, since its announcement and launch on March 3, 2017, Nintendo innovated by launching a console that was compatible with TVs, was portable and also had detachable controllers to play without the need for a TV but at considerable distances. Today, after 8 years since the launch of Switch, we remember what has made it more famous since its inception.
Nintendo Switch: One of the best ideas of the Japanese company.
After the WII U and the resounding success of the 3DS, which was not only compatible with its own titles, but also backward compatible with DS titles. The new console was a coin flip for brand managers. The history of Nintendo Switch, after 8 years, leaves many joys to its users and is a triumph for the industry both for its technological innovations. One of its first great achievements is that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched on April 28, 2017, has almost 76 million copies sold, being the best-selling title in the ecosystem and the fourth best-selling in history.
The developers, at the time of launching this console, promised to release 1-3 games per month and, despite the fact that on many occasions they did not fulfill this promise, most of their games have been of excellent quality or, at least, most of their exclusives. Also, at the time they launched a “Lite” edition, which had a considerably lower price and a more varied color design. This model is still in use today. Special editions were also released, such as “The Legend Of Zelda: ‘Tears Of The Kingdoom’, ‘Pokémon: ’Scarlett | Violet”, “Splatoon” or “Animal Crossing: New Horizons”.
Just a few years ago a new version was launched, which had more memory and a different screen. This new version was called “Nintendo Switch OLED”. The base version has 32 GB of internal memory, while the OLED has 64, both with 1080 in TV mode, 720 in semi-portable mode, its charging time is 3 hours and, the screen of the 2017 version is slightly smaller LCD.
Just as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is officially the Nintendo Switch’s best-selling title, The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild was the first video game released for the console and the third best-selling in its history. TLOZ: BOTW was released alongside a Wii U version, winning the Game of the Year award in 2017. It had a sequel (Tears Of The Kingdom) in May 2023, which do not follow the story of the TLOZ story, but are alternate and innovative stories where Link has to reunite with old friends and new allies to become stronger, defeat Ganon and rescue Princess Zelda.
Today, the world’s most famous “hybrid” is officially celebrating its eighth anniversary and with it an imminent end is approaching, but the joys, successes and minimal failures no one will take away from its users and those who every day hear that “click” of the Joy-con or when starting their favorite games.
