Before we start this review we want to thank SNK for allowing us a key to try Fatal Fury City of the Wolves on PlayStation 5, we hope you like it.
It has been several years since the last title of the saga and many players were already clamoring for a return of the SNK franchise, of course it must be said that the changes it underwent were for the better, since apart from satisfying the players of yesteryear the goal is to attract new audiences to this style of games.
What changes did we notice in Fatal Fury City of the Wolves?
Visually you can see the love that SNK has for its franchises, for example in the last title of The King Of Fighters, here they play more with the same, trying not to forget where they come from (the arcades in Japan, the machines in Mexico) and we must remember that these two franchises were the favorites in these sites known by an infinite number of people looking for entertainment in exchange for an affordable cost.
What we see in Fatal Fury City Of the Wolves as in any fighting game are the classic game modes, such as offline fighting, practice and story mode, but accompanied by 17 fighters + 5 DLC (already confirmed within its Season Pass) which will give us to choose from and we can adapt to any style of play either to play with our friends or competitively online and 19 scenarios that we hope along with the characters to be including increase as with the passage of time may be necessary.
Fatal Fury City of the Wolves has many improvements over what we currently see in the fighting industry, this was noticed second one in its launch as the community was greatly benefited with the updates that have been given as it is a Hitbox and a netcode almost flawless, giving us games from anywhere in the world very close and are fluid making whoever loses is more for a mistake and not for something external to them as it has been in previous years in this style of games.
Controls are for novices and veterans
Something that we noticed lately in classic fighting titles such as the rival brand collections and now Fatal Fury City Of The Wolves was not left behind, is that they come with the famous “simple” and “arcade” controls.
- Simple: This type of control is for the less experienced players who with simple keystrokes can execute combos, special attacks and advanced defenses.
- Arcade: This type of control is recommended for the most experienced, those who are already used to perform complex combos or who use the famous hitbox controls (button panel more similar to that of a “little machine”).
But all this is accompanied by a tutorial that will guide us step by step to see what type of control is best for us, along with basic missions where both novices and veterans we will feel accompanied with advanced training mode to analyze our data, frame by frame and extra missions our way of playing.
Game modes
This section of Fatal Fury City of the Wolves will be divided into 2 parts, offline and online, being a fundamental part today the Online, as it is in our opinion the one that comes to light today.
Offline
- Story mode: Episodes of South Town, is the continuation of Garou: Mark of the Wolves (the previous title of the saga) this is told through text boxes and the image of the character you are using and with which you interact, this if leaving a little to be desired as it could have used a better resource as cinematic or even more thematic type “comic”.
- Arcade: This mode is very similar to playing in a “little machine” since it only consists of choosing your character and climbing in fights against the roster of characters (without forgetting that the difficulty increases as we win fights) and in case we lose we can continue or simply leave.
- Practice: This mode will simply put you in front of an NPC without movement but with an example of a button panel, where you can see in detail what you are pressing and how is the best way to perform your combos, apart from the advanced mode that this with frame by frame repetitions, will help us to improve as we go playing and practicing with the character that best suits us.
Online
Online in Fatal Fury City of the Wolves has the classic casual games, qualifiers and rooms to play with friends, this with a wonderful netcode, letting it go smoothly.
We also have the clone mode, this allows us to make the characters learn from online fights all based on repetitions, copying as such the styles of play, giving us the opportunity to practice the techniques of the previous rival or prepare for one.
Audiovisuals
In this section Fatal Fury City of the Wolves leaves nothing to be desired, as it mixes everything that attracted our attention in the little machines with current mechanics, playing too much with the flashy colors but without leaving the faster and polished animations, which every modern player likes. The
As for the music, Fatal Fury City of the Wolves, brings us improved themes of the past, playing too much with nostalgia, but also the new orchestras will make us leave for a while those screens or menus to listen to them and continue being taken to more than one part of the universe that SNK has created here.
Conclusion
Fatal Fury City of the Wolves comes with a title that does not disappoint in any of the senses, both newcomers and veterans of the franchise will like how to enter the SNK universe as it has a lot to get hooked on and how to have that learning arc without getting frustrated.
Fatal Fury City of the Wolves is available for PC, PS5 and Xbox X Series X|S, it’s up to you where you want to be in your next fight.
