Demon Slayer cosplayer arrested at Chinese convention for wearing a Kimono
Through Twitter/X user @whyyoutouzhele, shared the video of this incident that took place at an otaku culture convention in Jinan, the capital of Shandong province. The video has generated a lot of comments on social networks, where it shows how a Demon Slayer cosplayer who decided to attend this convention and sought to enjoy the event characterized as her favorite character, was surprised by the intervention of security personnel.
The reason for the detention of the cosplayer was because the young woman was wearing a kimono, which, according to the rules set by the organizers of the event in China, was not allowed at the convention. The security personnel justified the situation by saying, “This is China, and the organizers have established that it is not allowed to wear kimonos,” a rule that while it may not be wrong, but may not be followed, since most of the characters, stories, for these conventions come from Japan, and that many of these use the kimono as their attire.
As can be seen in the video, the cosplayer was performing a characterization of Nezuko Kamado, a popular character from the anime Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba). This cute girl is known for her distinctive kimono and clogs within the series, which led the young girl to choose this outfit for the convention, however, local regulations prevailed, and the incident has sparked an online discussion.
The event, as mentioned above, occurred in Jinan, capital of Shandong province, on July 20, and has highlighted the complexity of the relationship between popular culture and national identities. The banning of the kimono at an event dedicated to otaku culture has generated a debate that transcends China’s borders, raising questions about the limits of freedom of expression and cultural appropriation.
Despite the controversy with the cosplayer, numerous Chinese netizens have expressed their support for the security personnel through comments on social networks, underlining the importance of respecting local regulations. Among the messages of support, comments such as: Rules must be respected and Forgetting our history can be treason, reflecting the need to adhere to established rules and a strong distaste for other cultures, this incident highlights the difficulty of balancing respect for local traditions with freedom of expression at events of this type of theme.
