Japan never ceases to amaze us with its unique traditions and love for otaku culture. This early 2025, one fan decided to put an unexpected twist on the New Year’s celebration by using one of the most shocking scenes from the iconic anime Code Geass.
The X (formerly known as Twitter) account @buritania_ro posted a 36-second video that quickly went viral. In this clip, the heartbreaking final episode of Code Geass is shown, where Lelouch Lamperouge, the main character, dies at the hands of Zero. However, fans of the series know that, at this point in the plot, Zero’s role is taken over by Suzaku Kururugi, Lelouch’s childhood friend, who accepts this fate to continue the masked hero’s legacy.
An iconic Code Geass farewell to welcome the New Year
The video recreates this shocking moment from the anime, using perfect timing so that the fateful moment of Lelouch’s death coincides with the start of the New Year. This peculiar way of celebrating the arrival of 2025 resonated so much with fans that, in a matter of hours, it accumulated 4.4 million views and 45,000 reactions.
Comments were quick to pour in, showing both humor and admiration for the user’s creativity. Some of the most prominent messages include:
- “Will it be possible to live through the first dawn of 2025 by watching Lelouch’s resurrection at different times?”
- “The best final episode at the worst time, hahaha.”
- “Don’t kill Lelouch!”
- “Hahaha, very creative way to start the year – Happy New Year, it’s almost time here in the States too!”
- “They just killed my boyfriend, help!”
- “Who do you think you are to celebrate the new year with the death of my husbando?”
The lasting impact of Code Geass
Since its premiere in 2006, Code Geass has been considered one of the most influential anime of its time, thanks to its complex narrative, unexpected twists and deeply developed characters that make an impact from start to finish. The final scene, known as the “Zero Requiem,” is especially memorable. In this denouement, Lelouch sacrifices his life in an act of redemption, allowing the world to find peace under Zero.
Lelouch’s sacrifice not only brings an end to political and social chaos, but also cements his legacy as a misunderstood hero. This scene is so powerful that even years later, fans find new ways to interpret and celebrate it, as evidenced by this creative countdown to 2025.
The Japanese are quite creative when it comes to celebrating the end of the year.
Japan has a rather peculiar way of celebrating some of the most important dates of the year, since it is only on New Year’s Eve that the Asian country has been celebrating for quite some time with a marathon of School Days, a series full of infidelities and shocking drama.
