Clannad puts us in the life of Tomoya Okazaki, a delinquent who finds life boring and believes he will never amount to anything. Along with his friend Youhei Sunohara, he skips school and plans to waste his days at school. One day, while walking to school, Tomoya passes a young girl muttering under her breath to herself. Without warning she exclaims ‘Anpan!’ which catches Tomoya’s attention. He soon discovers that the girl’s name is Nagisa Furukawa and she exclaims things she likes to motivate herself, Nagisa claims that they are now friends, but Tomoya walks away passing off the encounter as nothing.
However, Tomoya finds that he notices Nagisa more and more at school. Finally, he accepts and befriends her. Tomoya learns that Nagisa has fallen behind a year due to a serious illness and that her dream is to revive the school’s drama club. Claiming that he has nothing better to do, he decides to help her achieve this goal along with the help of four other girls. As Tomoya spends more time with them, he learns more about their lives and their problems, as he tries to help each girl overcome her respective obstacle, he begins to realize that life is not as boring as he once thought.
