“Chainsaw Man” is a work that is no stranger to controversy, very recently it was involved in one thanks to the fact that its fans were divided due to the new animation style that its new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc would have. But today we will talk about its most recent controversy and it seems that Tatsuki Fujimoto’s work has surprised us again, since its chapter 167 was the most read in Manga Plus and also catalogued by many as the most bizarre of the past year 2024.
“Chainsaw Man” left everyone shocked with its 167th chapter.
Shonen Jump is well known for bringing us Shonen works that we really love, among the most outstanding ones we have Boku no Hero Academia, One Piece or Jujutsu Kaisen that with the arrival of their new episodes have managed to thrill and move us with their stories, characters and incredible arcs.
Another of the most outstanding works of the Shonen Jump is the incomparable “Chainsaw Man”, which this year surprised us by leaving its peers behind and crowning itself as the manga series with the best-selling chapter, being number 167. This was learned thanks to a list published by MangaPlus on its official website, which is the official digital distribution platform of the Shonen Jump and in that medium the news was released.
In addition to this, this episode is known as one of the strangest in the manga of the young chainsaw. The episode shows us our protagonist Denji receiving a kiss from Asa, what makes this scenario strange is the way in which the girl approaches our protagonist and starts touching him. This results in some most disturbing panels that many consider bizarre and crown this scenario as one of the most bizarre in the “Chainsaw Man” oeuvre.
“After reading chapter 167, is it safe to say that CSM ch. 167 is now considered the most WTF moment by manga standards (and in the near future by anime standards)?”, ‘Well they say the calladitaa are the boldest’, ‘If Asa and Yoru inhabit different parts of Asa’s brain, does that mean they are in sync at this point? Could they both be simultaneously upset, but also attracted to Denji?’, these were some comments left by some users.
We know that “Chainsaw Man” has a strangeness that is captivating, from its complex characters, with ambiguous motivations and unpredictable reactions, to its strange way of showing us demons that represent abstract forms which gives us a glimpse of how surreal the work can be.
The story of “Chainsaw Man” follows Denji, a young man struggling to survive in a world where demons are a constant threat, our protagonist is forced to live a life of extreme poverty due to the debts of his deceased father, because of this he works as a demon hunter to pay off the debts of the yakuza.
However, after being betrayed and killed, Denji merges with his pet demon, Pochita, thus becoming the chainsaw man, a being with the ability to transform parts of his body into chainsaw weapons. From there, he begins his journey within a government organization that fights demons and faces challenges beyond his imagination.
“Chainsaw Man” is considered Tatsuki Fujimoto’s masterpiece, it has gained popularity for its unique approach, its strangeness and its unpredictable narrative that mixes extreme violence, absurd comedy, deep drama and moments of tenderness, which oddly enough makes you empathize with the characters and get deeply hooked to the work.
