Last June 7, the compilation movie of Bocchi The Rock! was released in Japan, and to promote it, very funny advertisements were placed in various stations in Tokyo. In total, 41 different posters were put up, all with demotivating expressions and phrases, fully representing the introverted personality and social anxiety of Hitori Gotoh, better known as Bocchi. It would be hilarious to think about what would happen if a person completely unaware of the context of this would come across such unmotivating messages on their way to work or school, but at the same time it’s an amazing way to catch those who don’t know the story yet.

For example, one of the advertisements found in Tokyo station has an image of Bocchi with a very scared face and the sentence it shows us is the following “If I don’t debut while in school, I will have to get a job… society is scary”. And, knowing both the context, as well as the personality of the protagonist of Bocchi The Rock!, it can cause a lot of laughter to think of this curious girl saying these sentences with the features that characterize her so much.

Some of the phrases that we can find in these ads are the following:

“Ikebukuro… I don’t like crowds.”

“Tokyo Tower is too bright for me.”

“Alone in Shibuya”

“No, I don’t want to work”

Bocchi the Rock! is a story written and illustrated by Aki Hamaji that began to be published in Hōbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Max magazine since December 2017 and has 6 compilation volumes to date. In October 2022, its anime adaptation was released, produced by CloverWorks, directed by Keiichirō Saitō and scripted by Erika Yoshida. In May 2023, a compilation movie was announced to be released in spring 2024 and in October of the same year, it was announced that it would be split into 2 parts.

If you still don’t know what Bocchi The Rock! is about, it tells the story of Hitori Gotoh, a high school student who learns to play the guitar because her dream is to be in a band. The problem is that she suffers from social anxiety, which makes it very difficult for her to make friends in order to form the band she so desires. However, everything changes when by chance he meets Nijika Ijichi, a girl who plays drums and is looking for a new guitarist for her own band called Kessoku Band.

A curious fact about Bocchi The Rock! is that the surnames of the members of Kessoku Band come from the members of Asian Kung-Fu Generation, a J-Rock band that exists in real life. Likewise, they share the same role as far as instruments are concerned, that is, for example, the girls with the surname Yamada of both bands play the bass guitar. What do you think of this Bocchi The Rock! advertisement? Do you find it entertaining?
