In recent hours, in social networks, a new controversy involving Artificial Intelligence and one of the largest anime conventions in the United States has been born. We are referring to the Anime Expo, being that in a few weeks a panel on voice acting in anime will be taking place within the same event. And although this seemed to be a good idea, what generated discontent in the networks is how they announced it. This is because they used an image, which can be seen without being very detailed, is made with Artificial Intelligence, something very punished by the fans.
Anime Expo in the eye of the storm over use of Artificial Intelligence
A few hours ago, the official account of the largest anime event in the United States, the Anime Expo, shared a new event. This one was about a panel specialized in voice acting, with techniques and more ways for those interested to participate. But it quickly became controversial, not because of the event itself, which could attract the attention of more than one, but because of the way it was announced. This was given with an illustrative image of a young man sitting in a recording studio. But it can be seen in several details that Artificial Intelligence was used in its creation.
This is more than evident in exact points, as for example in the hands of the young man, which are precisely in the center of the image. In this case, we see that his left hand, in the part of the fingers that are closest to the microphone, are unnaturally bent. Also, in the background, there are several illustrations accompanying the image, but these also show signs of being made with Artificial Intelligence. A clear example is a girl with blonde hair who has deformed eyes. All these mistakes are common in AIs, so it didn’t take long for fans to notice.
The users on the networks were quick to give their opinion
And as we mentioned, not only does the use of Artificial Intelligence jump out quickly, but users did not take long to mention it. That is why a great debate began in the networks, especially in the same publication of the Anime Expo. One of the most repeated points is the hypocrisy of the event, considering that it is based on animation. And is that using such tools in a world which is in constant conflict the use of AI, this was a move of disrespect on the part of the manager of publishing in networks.
In addition, many mentioned how, being such a big event, they could easily hire a real artist to create the images. This decision to use AI is seen by many as an easy and effortless way out. And the quality of the image, in the points mentioned above, such as hands or faces, quickly leaves the AI in evidence. For its part, the event did not make any statement on the matter. Although after this publication they made another one about an artist, and apparently this image would also have been made with Artificial Intelligence, so they would not be against using the tool.
